Round 1: Chain 5, slip stitch together to form a ring. (Work through both loops through the entire hat) Slip stitch together both loops of the first chain.

Round 2: Chain 3 (count as first dc now and throughout) and 13 double crochets in the ring. Slip stitch together, when you slip stitch to the top stitch of the original chain 3. Now and throughout the whole hat. (14 dc)

Round 3: Chain 3. Double crochet in the same stitch as the chain 3, then 2 double crochet in each stitch around. Slip stitch together. (28 dc)

Round 4: Chain 3, double crochet in the same stitch,  *Double crochet in next stitch, 2 double crochet in next stitch. Repeat from * around, slip stitch together. (42 dc)

Round 5: Chain 3, double crochet in the same stitch. *Double crochet in next 2 stitches, then 2 double crochet in next stitch. Repeat from * around, slip stitch together. (5 1/4" at this point) (56 dc)

Round 6: Chain 3. DO NOT double crochet in the same stitch as the chain 3 like the other rounds. Double crochet in each stitch around, slip stitch together. (56 dc) (This will turn up the edges)

Turn the edges the other way and continue on to Round 7.

Rounds 7-16: Repeat Round 6. (Round 6: Chain 3. DO NOT double crochet in the same stitch as the chain 3 like the other rounds. Double crochet in each stitch around, slip stitch together.) (56 dc)

As you go along, your hat will look like this: (I'm on Round 10 in this picture)

Row 17: Boy's Hats: Chain 1, sc all the way around to make a finished edge look. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Back of hat:

Boy's modeled hat: This hat stretches and fits both of my sons (10 and 11 1/2 years old) (20 inches around at the bottom edge before being stretched)

Row 17: Girl's Hats: Fasten off and weave in ends. (Do this with the inside of the hat facing you and the right side facing away.  This allows the most of the Fun Fur to fluff on the outside of the hat.) Attach Fun Fur with a slip stitch, chain 1 and sc around the hat edge.  Fasten off and weave in ends.  Finger fluff the Fun Fur.
