I've made hundreds of these hats for the local schools, for charities and for our troops. They are simple and warm. I used scraps to do many of them. It's fun to use 2 colors. When I use 2 colors, I do 8 rows in the first color and 7 rows in the second color. I did sell a couple to school workers and even did some in 3 colors. In three colors, I did 5 rows in each color. I used camo yarn and bold colors for the boys. For the girls, I added fun fur and everyone loved them.
Warm Winter Hat pattern
Round 1: Chain 5, sl st tog to form a ring.
Round 2: Ch 3 (count as first dc now and throughout) and 13 dc in ring. Slip st tog.(14 dc)
Round 3: Ch 3. Dc in same stitch as ch 3, then 2 dc in each st around. Sl st tog.
Round 4: Ch 3, dc in the same stitch. *Dc in next st, 2 dc in next st. Repeat from * around, slip st tog .
Round 5: Ch 3, dc in the same stitch. *Dc in next 2 stitches, then 2 dc in next st. Repeat from * around, slip st tog.
Round 6: Ch 3. Do not dc in the same st as the ch 3 like the other rounds. Dc in each stitch around, slip st tog.
Round 7-16: Repeat Round 6.
Row 17: Boy's Hats: Chain 1, sc all the way around to make a finished edge look. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Row 17: Girl's Hats: Fasten off and weave in ends. (Do this with the inside of the hat facing you and the right side facing away. This allows the most of the Fun Fur to fluff on the outside of the hat.) Attach Fun Fur with a sl st, chain 1 and sc around the hat edge. Fasten off and weave in ends. Finger fluff the Fun Fur.
Variation of Warm Winter Hat
1 1/4 skeins of Boa or something like Boa yarn
Scrap pink 4 ply worsted weight yarn
Do the above pattern holding one strand of worsted weight yarn and one strand of Boa yarn.
As you work the hat, do not turn it inside out. So the hat is actually worked with the inside on the outside. Hopefully, that makes sense. Weave in all ends.
Boucle Variation
1 1/4 skeins of Lion Boucle "Parfait"
Do the above pattern using this bulky yarn. I did 9 rows. I used a H hook for my daughter's hat.
